Fancy a go at air racing? Find out what it’s all about at a special weekend being staged at Popham Airfield on 18-19 April when Air Race School returns.

Air Race School is run by the organisers of the British Air Racing Championship, the Royal Aeroclub Records, Rallying and Racing Association – known as RRRA for short.

The idea is to bring in new pilots and navigators who wish to compete in the British Air Racing series of handicapped air races.

Any willing participant can attend either day as each day is identical to the other, to learn about the rules, regulations and techniques involved in air racing.

If the participant brings their own aircraft, they will have an opportunity to fly with an experienced race check pilot who will show them race techniques and guide them around a practice race course.

The one-day event is free to attend. For a pilot to race, they must have at least 100 hours P1 and an aircraft capable of at least 100mph straight and level.

Note that owing to advances in handicapping software, racing at 100% power is no longer mandatory and a reduced power setting can now be used.

This year’s air racing series will take place on these dates and venues:

  • 16-17 May, Haverfordwest
  • 20-21 June, Fishburn
  • 18-19 July, Wellesbourne
  • 22-23rd August, Sherburn in Elmett
  • 19-20 September, Shobdon
