Look out British Women Pilots’ Association… Annabel Cook is your new chairwoman!

Yes, Annabel, a freelance writer who works with FLYER in various roles and will make another appearance on The FLYER Show this week, was voted in by members as the new chair at the BWPA’s annual general meeting last weekend.

Annabel Cook has been a BWPA member for more than 25 years and spent a decade as a volunteer. From setting up the BWPA’s social media channels, Annabel has shaped the BWPA’s broader communications and visual identity across its website, press and printed materials.

Aviation has shaped her life for the past 25 years. A GA pilot who self-funded her PPL as a full-time student, she has since owned and rebuilt aircraft, and served as an officer in the RAF Volunteer Reserve (Training) commanding a squadron.

Annabel has gained her air-ground Radio Operator’s Certificate of Competence and Flight Information Service Officer’s licence, supported special-events air traffic control, worked at several airfields, and now has roles with FLYER and Pilot Careers Live. She is currently learning to fly helicopters.

Annabel said, “What I love most about the BWPA is how it brings women together from every part of aviation — student pilots, engineers, airline captains, enthusiasts. There’s so much potential in this community.

“My focus is on supporting our volunteers, strengthening partnerships, and making sure every member feels welcomed, connected and valued. This is your Association, and the more we do together, the stronger it becomes.”

As the BWPA looks ahead, it also says thank you to its outgoing Chairwoman Sharon Nicholson, who has led the Association over the past six years.

Sharon said, “It has been an honour to lead an organisation with such a rich history and such a passionate, dedicated membership. I’m delighted to hand over to Annabel, someone who knows the Association so well and who will bring fresh energy into our next chapter.”

Among the BWPA’s offerings are a number of awards and scholarships to recognise the achievements of women in aviation and support them in further flying endeavours. The scholarships for 2026 have yet to be announced.

The BWPA also has male members and supported International Men’s Day 2025.

“We believe progress happens when we all lift each other up, and our membership is open to everyone who supports women in aviation!” said the association.
