Cambridge Airport is likely to close by 2028 at the latest, according to Marshalls of Cambridge Group which owns and operates the site.
The 430-acre airport site will become a housing estate known as Cambridge East.
Marshalls’ plan was originally to move its aviation engineering interests from Cambridge Airport to Cranfield Airport. However, Marshalls confirmed this week that it had cancelled the move to Cranfield, saying it was no longer financially viable. It’s not yet been announced where they will go, although there are numerous current and former military airfields close by.
The announcements came as Marshalls of Cambridge Group released its 2024 accounts which revealed a pre-tax loss of £55.5 million.
In the introduction to the accounts, the Group “reaffirm development of its real estate assets as not only a priority, but a primary objective”.
A further statement from Marshalls this week said, “”Cranfield has been our preferred option for the relocation of our aerospace operations, and we have taken time to explore it carefully.
“However, after a lot of work and analysis, we have had to conclude that this proposed location is no longer affordable, and we have let the Cranfield team know about this decision.
“Our focus remains firmly on securing the long-term future of the business, and we are actively exploring a number of alternative options for relocation.
“Although commercial sensitivities mean we cannot share more detail at this stage, we are committed to providing updates as our plans continue to develop.”
