A new aircraft claiming to be the fastest factory-built piston-single has been launched in San Francisco. The Cobalt Co50 Valkyrie is capable of 260 knots, according to its designer David Loury who has been building and developing the aircraft for the past ten years.
The Cobalt Valkyrie is a spectacular looking aircraft with a canard wing at the front, and fighter-like main wing with pronounced upright wingtips. The 350hp engine is mounted at the rear, in pusher configuration, leaving the front of the aircraft clear. Visibility is said to be all-enveloping as a result.
“10 years ago, I had a vision to disrupt the aviation industry with an innovative private aircraft, that is not only technologically sound and safe, but also design-centric and luxurious,” said Loury. “Today, Cobalt is no longer just a prototype. It’s a world class aircraft, complete with advanced safety, technology, and modern design features for travel-loving consumers and aviation enthusiasts.”
The Cobalt was first seen at the 2010 Oshkosh event, when Loury was based in France. He moved the company to Canada, and now to California where the aircraft will be manufactured.
Two models were announced. The Co50 Valkyrie will be a type certified aircraft priced at $699,000. It has yet to achieve FAA type certification although deliveries are due to start in 2017. The Valkyrie X is a kitplane version in the Experimental class priced at $599,000. The kitplane should take six months to produce, said Cobalt, using a builder-assist programme.
According to Cobalt, the Valkyrie’s key features include:
1 Speed – the Valkyrie is the fastest private aircraft in its class with a max speed of 260 knots.
2 Safety – canard wing prevents the plane from stalling in the air. An onboard parachute is also provided for an additional sense of security.
3 Modern design and craftsmanship. “Inspired by classic fighter jets with clean lines and premium finishes, the Valkyrie impresses with understated elegance.” The interior features leather seats hand stitched by former Hermes craftsmen.
4. Visibility thanks the largest one-piece canopy in the world and a 320-degree view.
5. Comfort – seats for five people, including the pilot, with storage for golf clubs, skis and suitcases.
