Cranfield rebrands as ‘London Cranfield Airport’ in push for business aviation

Cranfield Airport is relaunching itself as London Cranfield Airport, with a clear shift towards growing its share of the UK’s business aviation market through a new strategic partnership with Weston Aviation.

The Bedfordshire airport, owned by Cranfield University, says the rebrand is designed to sharpen its appeal to corporate operators, charter firms and private jet owners by emphasising its proximity to both London and the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor.

The move comes as the airport joins Weston Aviation’s “The Collection” — a network of regional airports aimed at boosting business aviation traffic through shared sales, marketing and customer support. Under the deal, Weston will become Cranfield’s exclusive strategic business aviation partner.

For pilots and operators, it looks appealing. Cranfield has a 1,799m runway, no airline traffic to compete with, no slot restrictions and fast turnaround times. The airport also highlights remote customs clearance for international arrivals, allowing passengers to leave within minutes of landing.

Airport Director Robert Abbott said the partnership marks “an important milestone” in accelerating Cranfield’s ambitions to become a leading business aviation destination.

Nick Weston, CEO of Weston Aviation, said Cranfield’s “rich aviation heritage” and “excellent infrastructure” made it a strong fit for the network.

The airport has been steadily building capability to support that ambition. A new 38-metre radar tower, due to become operational this year, will improve air traffic management and increase handling capacity while supporting research and future unmanned aircraft integration.

For GA pilots, Cranfield remains a familiar name through its university links and long-standing role in flight test and research, but this latest move signals where its commercial focus now lies: bizjets.
