The long battle to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport appears to be winning with £160 million funding approved by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

No date has been set for General Aviation to restart but the aim is to have freight flights resume in summer 2026 and passenger flights towards the end of the following year.

Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said, “The funding, up to £160m, will enable the council to press ahead with its work to fully reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

“This means that we can continue to deliver the work needed to fully reopen the airport.”

Business Doncaster, part of Doncaster Council, added, “This is a huge milestone for our city and region. With this funding, Doncaster Council will be moving full speed ahead to get freight flights resumed, passenger bookings and holidays taking off as soon as we possibly can.

“Work is already underway — from airspace redesign to restoring critical infrastructure with recruitment for key airport leadership roles starting this week, in partnership with Munich Airport International.

“This airport will be a catalyst for growth, jobs, and opportunity — for Doncaster and the South Yorkshire region.
