Fly-in slots open for LAA Grass Roots Popham event

Slot bookings to fly into this year’s LAA Grass Roots Fly-in at Popham Airfield on 18-20 August have opened.

It’s the second year the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) has staged the Grass Roots Fly-in at Popham, instead a full-blown annual LAA Rally.

The LAA said this year’s admission price includes airside access and no additional charges for visitors. Anyone wishing to camp must book directly with the LAA. Pilots may camp underwing at no additional cost.

“While we continue the search for a long-term site to host a full-scale Rally,” said a LAA statement, “Popham enables us to build on the success of last year’s event, encapsulated in the airfield’s famed informal ambience.

“As always, the weekend will focus on the fly-in and social elements of our annual event. It will also provide the opportunity to see a wide range of exhibitors, hear from industry experts with our Speakers’ Corner programme of talks, get hands-on skill experience, and lots more.”

The fly-in will focus on runway 03/21 with a large adjacent exhibition area. There will again be a spacious main exhibitor marquee sponsored by Light Aero Spares. The Speakers’ Corner marquee, sponsored by Garmin Aviation, will host a varied programme of talks throughout the weekend, including an open O&A session each day with the LAA’s new CEO, Simon Tilling.

New for this year will be an extended marquee housing LAA activities, including the flea market. Outside will be larger displays from manufacturers and distributors of a wide range of the latest aircraft.

“The aircraft park is always a focal point for members and enthusiasts alike, not just for the breadth of aircraft types visiting, but particularly for members keen to display their recently completed build or restoration project,” added the LAA.

“Once again we will be judging entries for the various trophies and awards, which are always keenly fought over. While members have free access to the outside areas we will be simplifying the entry charges to provide a single, combined entry, which includes access to airside areas for non-members.”
