Horten Aircraft, the company behind one of general aviation’s most unusual aircraft concepts has put its entire flying-wing programme up for sale after failing to secure the investment needed to take the aircraft into production.
German manufacturer Horten Aircraft says it is seeking a new owner for the complete programme behind its Horten NG2, including the flight-tested HX-2 demonstrator, engineering data, tooling, intellectual property and business plans. The company says the package has been assembled to allow a buyer to take the aircraft directly into its next development phase.
The announcement comes just months after Horten launched an international campaign to attract investors, arguing that the FAA’s new MOSAIC regulations had transformed the commercial prospects for an efficient two-seat flying wing in the Light Sport Aircraft market.

In a statement, the company said, “Despite the hugely positive impact of MOSAIC on the future General Aviation market – and despite highly encouraging feedback throughout our recent investor outreach campaign – the decisive step into full funding has not materialised.”
Rather than abandoning the project, Horten says it wants to hand over the programme “to a new owner to bring the flying wing to market”.
At the heart of the sale is the Horten HX-2 demonstrator, which first flew in 2019 and has already accumulated valuable flight-test data. The aircraft is the latest descendant of several decades of flying-wing research inspired by the work of German designer Reimar Horten, although the modern company is separate from the wartime Horten aircraft programmes.
The proposed production aircraft, the Horten NG2, would retain the tailless blended-wing configuration but incorporate a more refined cabin, retractable undercarriage and Rotax 916 iS engine. Horten has promoted the design as a long-range touring aircraft offering lower drag and improved fuel efficiency compared with conventional light aircraft.

The company says the assets on offer extend well beyond the prototype itself and include aircraft-specific tooling, workshop equipment, engineering and test data, programme management documentation, marketing material, trademarks and technical intellectual property. It is also offering structured documentation to potential buyers and says the current programme manager could remain involved to help transfer knowledge during the transition.
