Nevil Shute Foundation Award

Owen Robertson and Richard Morissey have been named the winners of two scholarships awarded by the Nevil Shute Norway Foundation (Nevil Shute Norway was the novelist’s full name).

The scholarships went to members of Sherburn Aero Club, which was chosen because of its historic links with the writer – he was a director and company secretary of the club in the 1930s, and Sherburn featured in a number of his books.

The award was for ‘pilots showing well above average capabilities with wishes to to pursue a long term career in aviation’. Four candidates were put up for the two awards, and the two winners were chosen by a panel which consisted of two members of the Foundation, plus local representatives. The panel ‘considered the candidates aspirations for a future in flying, the lengths they had gone to to achieve their goals, their technical knowledge, and their thoughts as to the author’s appreciation of flying.’
