New engine shop launched

A new engine repair and overhaul facility has been set up near Stratford-on-Avon in the Midlands. The facility is officially called Ardair Ltd, but will be trading as Shvestov Engineering.

The facility will repair and overhaul the Russian Shvetsov series of engines, which include the AHh-82 (installed in the Lavochin La-5 fighter), the ASh-62 (as found in the giant AN-2 biplane)P and the ASh-21 (in the Yak-11).

The company has been created in response to Andrew Holman-West’s need for an overhaul on his Yak-11. “It has been grounded for 18 months due to metal in the oil,” he said. “I tried for over a year to find a repair shop I was confident could both repair and zero-time overhaul the engine.” He couldn’t find one, so decided to set up his own.

Also on the Ardair team is Dhugal Hunt, who spent 12 years as senior technician in the RAF, and Rob Stone, who spent 15 managing large project teams at MG Rover.
