Out of Africa movie Gipsy Moth up for auction

+VIDEO The de Havilland Gipsy Moth DH60M that starred in the Hollywood movie Out of Africa with actors Meryl Streep and Robert Redford is to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s on 1-2 March 2024.

Proceeds from the auction will go towards the creation of a new rhino sanctuary in Kenya, Africa. Black rhinos are one of the planet’s most endangered species with approximately just 5,000 rhinos remaining in Africa.

The film, released in 1985, was directed by Sydney Pollack and filmed in Kenya. The 1929 yellow Gipsy Moth biplane, piloted by Redford’s character, Denys Finch Hatton was flown during filming by Sir Henry Dalrymple-White, a renowned RAF Wing Commander.

The Gipsy Moth, reg G-AAMY, is said to be ‘entirely operational and last inspected for airworthiness in April 2022’. It is one of the later steel frame types, built in the USA under licence.

Actor Robert Redford is reported to have said, “This important initiative will not only help secure the survival of a critically endangered species but will conserve vital biodiversity and pristine wilderness for future generations.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to raise funds for this ground-breaking project.”

The RM Sotheby’s auction is at the ModaMiami classic car event held in Miami, USA 1-2 March 2024.
