The Popular Flying Association (PFA) is to change its name to the Light Aircraft Association (LAA) with effect from 1 January 2008.
The move was approved at an AGM this weekend.
Among the reasons presented for the change are falling membership numbers. The PFA believes that the PFA ‘brand’ image is currently vague and poorly presented, and the name doesn’t clearly identify what the Association stands for. Additionally, there is a feeling that as the lighter end of GA expands the Association must be able to position itself to take advantage of the new opportunities this will open up.
The PFA promises that the re-branding will be just the first step in a series of long-term changes but according to a statement from the Executive Committee (made before the AGM), ‘There is no intention of moving the association away from its core operations – making possible the economical building and flying of light aircraft.’
