Steve Fossett 'missing'

The search is continuing for legendary adventurer and multi-aviation record holder Steve Fossett who is ‘missing’ in a remote part of Nevada.

He is reported to have taken off Monday evening (local time) in his blue and white Citabria Super Decathlon N240R. No one knew where he was heading, and a search of local airfields failed to find him or his aircraft. No ELT signal has been received.

The airstrip at Barron Hilton’s Flying M Ranch in Nevada, which is where his flight took off, is in the middle of hilly and rough terrain. A number of aircraft have taken part in the search for the explorer, and the search is expected to start again this morning (local time).

Fossett, 63, is the first man to make a solo, non-stop, non-refueled aircraft flight around the world; he also made the first solo balloon circumnavigation.

The CNN website is running a vote on whether Steve Fossett is dead or not.
