Triple airfield challenge launched for Thruxton, Popham and Solent

Three of Hampshire’s airfields are staging a simple and fun competition over the weekend of the Summer Bank Holiday – 29th to 30th of August.

It’s called the Thruxton Triple Challenge and also includes Popham Airfield and Solent Airport.

The organiser is Mike Pearson, formerly manager of Popham and now Aviation Consultant to Thruxton Aerodrome.

Mike told FLYER, “You will know that Thruxton Aerodrome is under new ownership with much investment taking place under Alex Thistlethwaite. Solent Airport is no longer under the control of Regional City Airports with new management in place under Matt Wilkins, and Popham is now managed by David Hammer.

“So with everyone changing seats and with me now Aviation Consultant for Thruxton, we would like to invite pilots to revisit all three airfields.

“So over the weekend of 29th/30th August we are inviting pilots to a bit of fun, a skill competition or three with prizes and a free draw for 150 litres of avgas of your choice.

“If you register, £10 will go to Charity and the £35 entry fee includes landing fees for all three airfields.

“There will be catering facilities and camping available at Thruxton and Popham if you are flying from far away. For locals, the routing between the airfields is short so a nice social low cost weekend with some simple challenges.

“We are hoping for a busy weekend and to refresh pilots with three great Hampshire airfields.”

As the graphic shows, the skill competition is different at each airfields: Taxi Challenge at Thruxton, Spot Landing at Popham and Timed Arrival at Solent. Full details will follow soon but put the date in your flying diary.
