Vulcan to the Sky project saved

Update 1/9/2006: The Vulcan in the Sky project has revealed that it has now received the funds that it needs to continue its work.

The money has been raised thanks to thousands of small donactions – quoted as being between £10 and £1000 – plus one huge £500,000 gift.

This huge personal donation has been given by Jack Hayward, OBE, the man who also rescued the SS Great Britain to bring her back to the UK.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, formed to get Vulcan XH558 – the last V bomber – back into airworthy condition for airshow displays, has run into ‘a serious problem regarding funding’. The news will be unwelcome to those who have already backed the project – the public, aerospace industry and Heritage Lottery Fund – to the tune of £4.6m, but a shortfall in funding is now set to cause major difficulties, unless the trustees can resolve the problem by the end of August.

Bob Ivison, of the Vulcan Operating Company, tells FLYER that the project “needs an immediate cash injection of £350,000 before the of the month.” A further £800,000 will then be required to get the delta-wing bomber to its first post-restoration flight, the extra money being needed to cover increased prices and past delays in the programme.
