Hot on the heels of Cessna’s announcement about its C162 SkyCatcher comes news that Cirrus is also to enter the LSA market.

Cirrus, though, is taking a different approach and piggybacking someone else’s work. As it announced today at AirVenture Oshkosh, the Cirrus SR Sport is actually based on the Funk Fk14 Polaris, a German type. It said “For the last four years, Cirrus has been evaluating two-seat planes from European manufacturers – the hotbed of development for this type of aircraft.”

The Cirrus Sport (or SRS) should cruise at about 120 kt – the maximum limit for LSAs – have a single-power lever and the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS™). It’s powered by a Rotax 912S and has a useful load- of 400 lb (min).
