CAA issues GPS approach ATSIN

The CAA has released an ATSIN (Air Traffic Services Information Notice) on the introduction of the RNAV(GNSS) Instrument Approach Procedures – a type of non-precision approach supported by the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS). “These IAPs,” says the document “will be available to instrument runways at licensed aerodromes with an approach control service for use by suitably equipped aircraft.”

The ATSIN also sets how ATS (Air Traffic Service) providers can apply to introduce these approaches, and some provisions for creating ‘Safety Case’ documentation to support the application.

An attachment to the ATSIN includes some of the phraseology to be used when requesting/using/granting a GPS approach. These will be included in CAP413, the Radio Telephony Manual.

The phrases include the initial “(Aircraft c/s), request RNAV approach via [Initial Approach Fix Designator], runway xx” through to the reporting of signal difficulties by both controllers and pilots.
