Continental Aerospace Technologies is developing an FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to fit its 180hp IO-370 engine to later-model Piper Archer aircraft, while also announcing a significant extension to the warranty on factory-overhauled engines.
The proposed STC will initially cover 2018-on Piper Archer LX, Archer TX and Pilot 100i models, giving owners an alternative to the standard Lycoming IO-360 powerplant with a factory-supported Continental installation.
The company says the move is aimed at providing more choice for owners while expanding the number of Continental-powered aircraft in the training and private flying sectors.
The four-cylinder IO-370 develops 180hp at 2,700rpm and is already established in other applications. Continental says development and flight testing are well underway, with the prototype completing its first flight in June. The company plans to submit the STC for FAA certification before the end of 2026.

Karen Hong, President and CEO of Continental Aerospace Technologies, said the Archer programme forms part of the company’s growing portfolio of aftermarket products.
“The IO-370 Piper Archer STC is an important addition to our growing portfolio of aftermarket solutions and reflects our continued investment in supporting aircraft owners throughout the entire life cycle of their aircraft,” she said.
Alongside the Archer announcement, Continental has increased the warranty on qualifying factory engine overhauls carried out by its Continental Services facility in Fairhope, Alabama.
Improved warranty for factory engine overhauls
From 20 July 2026, Continental and Lycoming engine overhauls completed by the company will be covered for two years or 450 operating hours, replacing the previous warranty of one year or 300 hours. The overhaul work uses OEM and approved PMA parts and is carried out by factory-authorised technicians.
David Shear, Director of Continental Services, said the longer warranty demonstrates the company’s confidence in the quality of its overhaul work.
For Archer owners, however, the more eye-catching announcement is the prospect of a new factory-backed engine choice. If the STC secures FAA approval on schedule, it could become an attractive option for flight schools and private owners looking at engine replacement, while introducing Continental power to one of general aviation’s most popular training aircraft.
