Govt seeks new Aviation Ambassadors - here's how to apply

The Department for Transport (DfT) is looking for a fresh intake of Aviation Ambassadors – volunteers from across the flying world who are willing to inspire the next generation.

Applications open today (22 September), with the scheme forming part of the government’s Generation Aviation programme to help build a future workforce and broaden access to aviation careers.

The idea is simple: Ambassadors – who come from every corner of the industry, from airline cockpits to engineering hangars and even aerobatic competition – combine their day jobs with outreach work.

That could mean giving talks at schools and colleges, attending careers fairs, mentoring, or just sharing their story online. The aim is to put aviation on the radar of people who might never have considered it before, particularly those from underrepresented communities.

Keir Mather MP, now confirmed as Aviation Minister, said, “Our Aviation Ambassadors play a vital role – helping to break down barriers, share their experiences and encourage the next generation to aim high. This is about securing the future of aviation and ensuring our young people have their eyes open to highly skilled jobs and opportunities.”

The current line-up includes some familiar faces:

  • Hannah Wells, an easyJet First Officer who regularly visits school
  • Mike Glen, Head of Airspace and Noise at AGS Airports and RAF Air Cadets sector commander
  • Alice Goodwin, an engineer with Virgin Atlantic
  • Aerobatics competitor Jack Jenner-Hall, who first made headlines as the UK’s youngest pilot after qualifying as a glider pilot at just 14.

Alice Goodwin summed up the spirit of the scheme, “It wasn’t until I met a pilot at a school careers fair that aviation came onto my radar.

“I believe it is my responsibility as an engineer to continue encouraging the next generation, especially those from underrepresented communities.”

For GA pilots, instructors, engineers or anyone already immersed in the flying world, this could be a chance to give something back – and maybe spark the interest of tomorrow’s pilot, air traffic controller, or aerospace innovator.

Applications close at 12:00pm on 10 October 2025. Click here for more details and to apply.
