Blackpool Airport based HeliSpeed Academy is integrating five hours of simulator time into its helicopter Private Pilot Licence (PPL(H)) training.

Helispeed said, “This training will enhance pilot safety, proficiency in emergency procedures, adverse flight conditions and in challenging operational scenarios.

“This CAA approved innovative approach ensures pilots develop critical safety skills in a safe and controlled environment, instilling a deep understanding of safety from the very beginning of their flight training.”

The types of scenarios that can be replicated in the simulator include:

  • Emergency Procedures: Practicing critical decision-making and response techniques for engine failures, system malfunctions, and other in-flight safety emergencies
  • Vortex Ring State: Understanding and mitigating the hazardous aerodynamic phenomenon that can lead to loss of control
  • Low-Level Visibility Operations: Enhancing spatial awareness skills in poor weather conditions
  • Sloping Ground Landings: Refining precision control and judgment for landings and take offs on uneven terrain
  • Confined area operations and night flying challenges.

Geoffrey Packer, CEO of HeliSpeed, added, “Traditional PPL training does not always allow pilots to experience and manage high-risk scenarios.

“By incorporating these crucial simulator sessions into the PPL(H) CAA Approved Training Course, we are bridging that gap giving our students the opportunity to learn and adapt to real-world challenges safely.

“This safety initiative is a significant step towards enhancing flight safety and operational competence.”
