Jeppesen ForeFlight launches as standalone company after $10.55bn sale

Jeppesen and ForeFlight have officially begun life as an independent aviation software company, having separated from Boeing in a deal worth $10.55 billion.

The new entity, Jeppesen ForeFlight backed by private-equity firm Thoma Bravo, brings together two big names in digital flight planning and aeronautical data.

Former Boeing Digital Aviation Solutions head Brad Surak is CEO of the new company. He said, “Backed by 90 years of Jeppesen’s gold-standard data and ForeFlight’s relentless spirit of exploration, this combination is building the most unified, intuitive platform in aviation.

“As we return to independence alongside a leader in software private equity investing, we’re enabled to move faster, think bigger, and innovate.”

The company says artificial intelligence (AI) will play a major role in future development — “from the flight deck to the operations control centre” — aimed at boosting efficiency and safety across commercial, business, military and general aviation operations.

ForeFlight is already known in for GA for its flightplanning and moving map tech, while Jeppesen’s charts and aeronautical data are used by professional and recreational aviators alike.
