New pilot watches from Garmin

Garmin pilot watches

Garmin has unveiled the latest additions to its aviation smartwatch range — the D2 Air X15 and the D2 Mach 2 — packing in brighter  touchscreens, longer battery life and more aviation-relevant tools.

Both watches support Garmin’s avionics connectivity via the Garmin Pilot app, allowing pilots to view flight data and receive crew alerting messages directly on the wrist. There’s also an ‘Aviation Morning Report’ — a summary of local field conditions plus a health snapshot based on your recent sleep and activity data — and a new voice command feature, which includes aviation-specific phrases like “Start Fly activity” or “Show me the METAR.”

Pilots can also record geo-referenced voice notes during a flight, tag them to the Garmin Connect app, and access two-way messaging through Garmin’s Messenger app.

D2 Air X15 highlights

The D2 Air X15 is a 45mm smartwatch with a stainless or slate bezel and Gorilla Glass 3. It includes a red and white LED flashlight (useful for pre-flights and cockpit tasks in the dark) and offers compatibility with Garmin’s PlaneSync system for remote aircraft status — though this requires a GDL 60 and an active subscription.

Battery life is up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, and the watch face can auto-colour based on current METARs from your selected airport.

D2 Mach 2: more mapping, more alerts, more rugged

Available in 47mm and 51mm sizes, the D2 Mach 2 adds more advanced aviation features, including detailed topo maps with airspace boundaries, VORs, intersections, and runways. Pilots can customise the aircraft icon to match their mount (piston, turboprop, jet or helicopter) and track their flight path via breadcrumb-style logs.

A big addition is the weather alert system, which compares conditions to your own personal minimums — crosswind, visibility, ceiling, etc. — and flags when thresholds are exceeded. A dive mode with a no-fly timer also makes an appearance.

Battery life stretches to 26 days depending on model and use. The 47mm version comes with a leather band and titanium bezel; the larger 51mm version has a vented DLC titanium bracelet and optional silicone QuickFit® strap.

UK pricing and availability haven’t yet been confirmed, but US MSRPs start at $649.99 for the X15 and climb to $1,499.99 for the larger Mach 2.

We’ve got both watches on test — expect a hands-on review soon at flyer.co.uk and on our YouTube channel.
