Pilot dies in Headcorn crash

A pilot was killed yesterday when the aircraft he was flying was involved in an accident on takeoff.

The De Havilland Turbo Beaver apparently hit a static display aircraft, part of the Air Warfare museum. The museum is situated at the end of the shorter 21/03 runway.

The pilot was cut out from the wreckage, but died later in hospital.

Of the eight parachutists on board, one sustained serious injuries.

The pilot is reported to have been using the runway all day, without any apparent problems; however, on this occasion, the aircraft failed to get airborne. The AAIB will, of course, be on site and assessing the circumstances of the tragedy.
