The UK Met Office has unveiled its new Aviation Visualisation Service called MAVIS. It’s a single, streamlined platform designed to replace several of its existing aviation weather services.

MAVIS brings together the Aviation Briefing Service, Network Weather Resilience, HeliBrief and OpenRunway into one user-friendly system, offering pilots and operators a central access point for forecasts, observations, and weather map layers.

That means everything from METARs and TAFs to lightning data, SIGMETs, and customisable map views can now be found in one place. The service has been developed with direct input from users, aiming to create a more intuitive, consistent experience across the aviation sector.

Updates introduced in August 2025 include a new domain – mavis.metoffice.gov.uk – plus features such as site pinning, new weather layers (including observed lightning and sea surface temperature), and customisable base maps that save across devices.

The Met Office says MAVIS is designed for all sectors of aviation, from airlines and airports through to GA pilots, balloonists and glider pilots. The goal is not only to simplify access but also to future-proof the system as aviation weather needs evolve.

The current Aviation Briefing Service will remain available until Spring 2026, but users are being encouraged to transition to MAVIS ahead of its retirement.

More information, including explainer videos, user guides, and FAQs, can be found on the Met Office MAVIS webpage.
