Sonex gives update on Highwing kitplane

US kitplane maker Sonex has revealed more details on its Big Highwing project, first announced in 2021.

Key points:

  • 42in wide cockpit interior
  • Large door and step-in height of 602mm (tailwheel), (542mm nosewheel)
  • Removeable wings
  • Fuel system: 20 US gallon fuel tank in the nose plus two 5 USG auxiliary tanks in wing roots
  • Stick configuration: the aircraft will be convertible between dual stick and a shared centre stick
  • Baggage: 60 lb max weight and 16 cu ft space
  • Aerobatics: The Sonex Highwing will be capable of Aerobatics with two persons on board.
  • Ballistic rescue whole aircraft parachute (BRS) will be an option
  • Engine options limited by 200 lb firewall forwards limit: AeroVee, UL Power, Jabiru 3300 and Rotax 9-series
  • Weights: max weight 1302 lb, aiming for dry weight of 720 lb giving payload of 600 lb
  • Floats and skis options.
